Race Results 2014

For now I am just including the basic results of the races I have run in 2014. I hope to eventually have recaps, with more detail, added. Check back later for more detail and eventually new races.

2014

February 2

USA Masters Half Marathon Championship in Melbourne, FL.
Held as part of the Publix Melbourne Marathon and Half Marathon, the race is the USATF national Masters Championships.
I finished just ahead of two young guys in 1:29:29. To break 90 minutes in such muggy conditions was very satisfying.

Finish: 39th overall and 1st in the Male 65-69 age group with a time of 1:29:29.
I am the reigning 2014 Half Marathon Champion of the USA (in that age group).

Age-Grading*: A National Class time graded at 88.4%, strong enough to finish in the top 7 overall and win a medal for that too.

February 23

USA Masters 8K Championship in Brea, CA.
The race was held for the first time this year in Brea, CA., one of the outlying suburbs of Los Angeles.

Finish: 84th overall and 2nd in the Male 65-69 age group with a time of 32:12. Silver medal in this national competition behind Lloyd Hansen, a top 65 year old runner residing in Utah.

Age-Grading: A National Class time graded at 88.04%

April 12

Horizon Bank 8K in Carmel, IN.
A local race held as part of the Carmel Marathon weekend, the Horizon Bank 8K served as a good warm-up for the USA 10K Championships [see below].

Finish: 27th overall and 1st in the Male 65-69 age group with a time of 32:24.

Age-Grading: 87.48%

*Age-grading is based on a formula that adjusts for the slower times as part of the aging process. USATF promulgates this standard and offers medals and cash awards to the top masters runners [aged 40 and up] on the basis of age-graded times. Because courses differ in terms of elevation changes and other characteristics it is only a rough guide to the quality of performance across races.

April 26

USA Masters 10K Championship in Dedham, MA.
Combined this with a visit to my daughter, helping her move from Cambridge, MA to New Haven, CTThe course was fairly challenging so delighted to notch my first 'world-class' time.

Finish: 59th overall and 2nd in the Male 65-60 age group with a net time of 39:52-Silver medal in this national competition behind Bill Dixon, a top 66 year old runner from Vermont.

Age-Grading: Net time age grades out at 90.05%, my first 'world class' performance as a Masters athlete. Cracked the top 15 overall in age-grading against a very tough field.

May 10

Fifth Third River Bank 25K Run in Grand Rapids, MI.
Part of the US Open Racing Circuit, the 5th 3rd river bank run is a regional race that attracts top runners from around the country and the world. At about 15.5 miles, it was the longest race I had run ever and a good tune up for my first Marathon (see below). I surprised myself by how well I ran.

Finish: 210th overall of nearly 6000 runners. 1st in the Male 65-69 age group with a net time of 1:46:27.

Age-Grading: Net time age grades out at 89.02%, one of my best age-graded performances.

June 21

Charlevoix Marathon in Charlevoix, MI
A beautiful, fairly flat course with one major hill and a few smaller hills. Only about 500 runners in marathon so not crowded. First marathon. hard to train for and hard to run. I did not run as well as I hoped but ran pretty well nonetheless for a first time and for 'squeezing it in' rather than training all out for the marathon. I ran it in order to get a Boston Qualifying time for the Boston Marathon in April 2015 and was successful. The qualifying standard for Boston for men in the 65-69 age group is 4:10:00. If one exceeds the qualifying standard by at least 20 minutes (as I did) one is highly likely to be allowed in the race. So as long as I remember to register on Monday, September 8th at 10 a.m. I should be able to place the Boston Marathon on my calendar for Patriot's Day in 2015. I hope the training will go better and the race.

Finish: 40th overall. 1st in Male 65-69 age group with a time of 3:18:38.

Age-Grading: 83.69%

July 16

Joseph Maley Foundation 5K in Indianapolis, IN
A local race over a pretty flat course.

Finish: 57th overall- 1st in Male 65-69 group in 19:42.5

Age-Grading: 87.51%

August 2

Beach to Beacon 10K in Cape Elizabeth, ME
An iconic race with a strict cap so race is fully registered within minutes of opening up. About 6500 runners compete. Race Director graciously offered me an elite entry when I told him I would be in the area for my daughter's wedding. As in past yeasr, the winner on thee male side had the fastest time so far this year in the world in a 10K race. Americans did very well with Ben True finishing 3rd overall in a very fast time (sub 28) and on the women's side was the more dramatic race with Shalane Flanagan just getting nipped at the finishing tape by Gemma Steel of the UK. I ran fairly well although battling a minor injury.

Finish: 297th overall- 1st in Male 65-69 group in net time of 40:39. Second overall among male masters runners on the basis of age-grading.

Age-Grading: 88.31%

August 9

Personal Best 5 Mile Run in Indianapolis, IN. (Broad Ripple)
A local 5 mile race over fairly flat terrain. Tends to attract a number of strong, young adult runners who currently train [or who have trained in the past] with Matt Ebersole, the coach of the Personal Best Club

Finish: 33rd overall-1st in Male 65-69 group in net time of 32:24.

Age-Grading: 88.03%

  1. To add to the challenges provided by the extreme distances in this sort of race, a lot of ultrarunning trail races will have runners on different terrains, elevations, and in the case of multiple day races, even the weather can change over the course of the race. Adriana Grillet
