March 26, 2021. On the eve of their 2nd track meet of the season, the East Coast Invitational, I report on the Masters results in their first Track Meet of 2021, the Pre-Nats Tuneup on March 20th. It is part of the Garden State Track Series. See below for upcoming meets in the series. The event of interest to Masters LDR runners was the 5000 Meters. Although it was mostly GSTC runners competing, a few from other clubs and nearby cities ran as well. The weather, as posted on Strava by Jonathan Frieder was pretty good for distance runners: Clear, 55°F, Feels like 55°F, Humidity 23%, Wind 4mph from WNW.
The fastest three times turned in by Masters Athletes were also the top in Age Grading* as well. Two of the top 3 were Garden State athletes. Duncan Nyasinga, 41, clocked 15:18.36 for a 87.88%. Nyasinga regularly had the top times among Masters competing last year in GSTC's Virtual Run series. Fifteen seconds later, Chris Naimoli, also 41, who runs for the Bryn Mawr TC out of Philly, came across in a nifty 15:35.55, netting a 86.26% age grade.

Naimoli's last outing on the roads that we heard about was his Overall win at the 2019 Masters 15K Championships at Tulsa in 48:37. This Track Meet was partial payout for his hard training on the land, on the bike, and in the water over previous months. Pointing to an Ironman Triathlon in Texas, he learned that it had been cancelled. Truly disappointing, but getting this result at least allowed him to put something on the board for 2021. Third Masters athlete across the finish line was Jonathan Frieder, 50 now, in 16:32.54. Disappointed that he missed his 16:20 target, given his fitness, Jonathan was philosophical about the result. An 87.19% age grade score is nothing to sneeze at! Of course the last time he ran a National Championship 5K, he ran 15:39 at the age of 46; that's one of his reference points.

His twin, Elliott Frieder broke 17 with his 16:58.51 84.97%. Others who hit the national standard in age-grading included John Hogan , 55, who ran a 17:50.15 84.26%, and, 3 seconds later, Steven Segaloff, 50, at 17:53.40 80.63%. Others who took the opportunity to run in this tuneup race included Chris Forti, 42, of NYC 17:4010 76.70%; Carlos Piniero, 43, who ran 18:30.42 73.78%; Jarrett Dewelde 18:43.14 age unknown hence no age grade; and Marco Cardoso, 48, 19:48.31 71.67%.
One Masters Woman competed, Caoimhe Kilroy, 41, who was a scoring member of the GSTC W40 team that took Team Bronze at Lehigh's Club Cross Championships in December 2019. Her 19:09.53 merited a 78.91% age grade.
It will be interesting to see how things go this coming weekend at GSTC's East Coast Winter Championships.
