December 13, 2025. When the World Athletics Road Running Championships were pulled from San Diego, USATF lost its September Half Marathon Championship. While the Committee was scrambling for a replacement race, a bid for a Masters Marathon was submitted by Fit Foundation to USATF. Staff convinced the bidder to submit for a Half Marathon in 2025 and a Marathon in 2026. The race will be held this Sunday, December 14th, with the Championship starting at 9 AM.
The Fit Foundation utilizes a 1.64 Mile course in Pace Bend Park, a 45 minute drive from the Austin TX Airport. The Fit Foundation is also hosting the Star of Texas Marathon Sunday morning. The community race is open to all ages. But the Foundation emphasizes its suitability for older runners hoping to qualify for Boston, with pacing guidelines and such. The Marathon consists of 16 loops of the 1.64 Mile course. That race starts at 8 AM. The Half Marathon is over 8 loops. The course is certified and the event sanctioned. There may also be runners pursuing goals related to the 50 Mile and 50K distances.
The course is described as rolling hills with lake views. If one thinks of the course as being a little longer than a mile and a half, the course essentially falls, in a couple of steps, by 50 feet over the first mile and then climbs 56 feet in the final half mile. That loop is then repeated 8 times with a 180-degree turn at one end and a softer loop turn at the other. The temperatures should be ideal for a fast half marathon. Temperatures for Sunday morning between 9 AM and 11 AM are forecast to be in the mid-40's throughout. Skies should remain cloudy before brightening up after the race. Wind could be a little troublesome, at 14 mph from the NNE, gusting to 24.
This will be the first time Fit Foundation has mounted a USATF Championship. The event has attracted a very small field. But there are many high-quality Masters runners at the championships and a number of tight races that should be thrilling to watch unfold on this kind of course.
OVERALL CHAMPIONSHIPS
MEN Raymond Brown Bat City Track Club, TX and his teammate, Bryan Morton, from Austin, will defend the honor of Texas against Edwin Pagan unaffiliated, NJ, also from 40-44. But the will need to reckon with seasoned runners from older age divisions, George Darden Atlanta Track Club, GA, out of 50-54 and a pair out of 55-59, Gregory Putnam Central Mass Striders, MA and Frank Zoldak Boulder Road Runners, CO. All have times from fairly recent events suggesting that on a standard half marathon course with no elevation drop, and not much above sea level, like the course at Spicewood, they might all run somewhere between 1:13 and 1:16. In early 2024, Brown ripped off a 1:15:41 half at the 3M Half Marathon in Austin; he finished 2nd Masters. That was his tune-up race for New York that year. He toured the five broughs of New York that year in 2:38:00. Things did not go so well in February of this year; Brown clocked 2:59:19 at the Ascension Seton Astin Marathon. The slower time could have been due to a niggling injury going into the race or Brown may have run into trouble during the race; the Marathon is unforgiving. In any case, Brown was able to finish among the top ten Masters at the prestigious Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Miler in D.C. two months later. His 55:12 time is age grade equivalent to a 1:13:25 half marathon; so there were no repercussions from that Marathon outing. His teammate, Morton can counter with a sparkling 1:10:33 that gave him top 35-39 honors at the 2022 3M Half Marathon. At the end of that year, Morton headed to California to test the California International Marathon, better known as the CIM. That course tends to be fast; Morton took advantage, clocking 2:34:03 roughly equivalent to a 1:14:35 HM. His most recent long result was at the November 2024 Run for Water 10 Miler, a 57:28. Learning that the course is basically an out and back loop with some serious hills suggests that 57 and change might be closer than one would initially think to his teammate's 55 and change at the Cherry Blossom.
Their 40-something challenger, Pagan comes in from New Jersey. In August 2023, he ran a nifty 1:12:25 at the Ocean Beach Half Marathon along the Long Island Shore in Connecticut. That course is at sea level but is a loop course described as having rolling hills with a long hill at mile 8. That suggests the 1:12:25 is a good, honest HM time. It was good enough for 5th overall and first 30-39. Two months later Pagan dropped a 2:29:58 at Chicago, finishing top fifteen in 35-39. Like Morton, his more recent events are not quite as strong. Still, a 1:16:08 to finish top ten in 35-39 at the November 2024 BAA Half Marathon is 'nothing to sneeze at!' His 30-39 finish among the top six in the Open Men's race at the Brooklyn Mile this August does not tell us much about half marathon fitness, but it does indicate he is fit to race.
Darden, a seasoned marathoner, finished top twenty M45 at London in 2022, clocking 2:35:41. In December of last year, Darden raced to 2:38:22 at the Valencia Marathon. That course is gaining a reputation as one of the faster international marathons. But Darden is still the one who had to run that fast!

In March of this year, Darden raced the hilly Atlanta half marathon in 1:16:25. In September, Darden added the Loch Ness Marathon to his list of international marathons, clocking 2:40:28 for the M50 and up win.
Putnam finished second in the M50 division of the USATF 2022 Masters Half Marathon over a hilly course in Syracuse, finishing just outside the top ten overall in 1:15:48. A year later, the race had to be run later in the spring and it was uncomfortably warm for a half marathon. Putnam ran a minute slower but won M50 and found himself on the Overall podium with the bronze medal. In May of that year, Putnam ran 1:14:33 at the Run to Remember HM in Boston.

Struggling with injury earlier this year, Putnam showed he is race fit by cracking a 1:16:18 at the Newburyport HM in Massachusetts in October. With another couple of months of training under his belt, Putnam might well be ready to go faster.
Zoldak is the wild card. He has been a fierce competitor on the turf. The Club Cross Country championships typically attract the largest and deepest fields of any Masters LDR Championships. At 2023 Club Cross in Tallahassee, Zoldak, out of M55, ran in the lead pack for much of the race and finished 11th overall. Zoldak was not as dominant on the sloppy course in Tacoma in December 2024 but still took 2nd M55 in a loaded field. In June of this year, Zoldak finished 6th overall at the Masters 4 Mile Championships in 21:29, a pace of 5:22/mile. Zoldak does not have a long list of longer races. The one I found, a 1:17:46 at the Equinox Half Marathon in September of 2024, seemed tantalizing. Because it was at altitude in Colorado, I could think of it being equivalent to a 1:16 HM at sea level. But then I learned that it had a 600' drop overall so that probably takes away some of that faster time adjustment. No doubt Zoldak has been training up at altitude for a good outing at Spicewood. He knows how to race; it will be interesting to see if he can stay with the 'youngsters'!
Based on that review, it appears to me that Pagan is the one to beat. And perhaps Morton and Brown, in that order, can hold off the grandmaster group. There is no likelihood that will prove an easy task!

WOMEN The Women's field is much smaller. It appears that the primary contenders are: Morgan Ekemo Unaffiliated, AK, Melissa Gacek Twin Cities Track Club, MN, Jennifer Rodriguez Unaffiliated, PA, and Elizabeth 'Liz' Guerrini Cal Coast Track Club, CA. Ekimo is the sole entrant in W40. This is the first national Masters ldr championship for the Eagle River AK runner. Ekemo ran for Virginia Tech and the University of Colorado in college. Her best track performances from that era included a 9:48 3000 meters indoors and a 16:45 5000M run outdoors. I find no longer distance races for Ekemo but she has been active at shorter distances on the roads. In January of this year, she ran a 19:54 5K to finish 4th overall and 1st Masters in the short race at the Carlsbad Marathon. In May 2024, Ekemo ran 42:49 at a 10K in Anchorage. In Winter 2024 Ekemo tested the Masters waters at the Indoor Championships, finishing fifth in 12:21.9. Ekemo has, no doubt, trained up for a half marathon as she eases into national masters competition.
Gacek is a proven Masters competitor at the national level. She is returning after stepping away from the national Masters stage for a few years. Her last Masters LDR national championship was the 2019 15K Masters at Tulsa. Her 59:05 over that hilly course resulted in an Overall silver medal. She competed on the track at WMA and USATF Masters track after that. In 2022, she ran two prestigious Minnesota races. At Grandma's, she ran 1:24:52 to finish 1st W45. Later that year she took the W45 crown in the 10 Miler on Twin Cities Marathon weekend. Her time was 1:06:42. It seems unlikely she can match those kind of efforts now. In May, 2023, she ran 1:31:29 at the Stillwater HM. This year she ran a couple of races with her high schooler. Gacek continues to use her old name for USATF purposes but is now racing in Minnesota races as Schuch.
Melissa Shuch ran a 19:39 5K in July and 1:30:25 at the City of Lakes HM. Most likely she will be prepped for a sub 1:30 effort on Sunday.

Like Gacek/Schuch, Rodriguez ran as Malavolta until recently. In 2018, Malavolta finished 26 seconds behind Gacek at Tulsa to nab the 15K bronze overall medal. In 2022, Malavolta finished 3rd W50 at the 2023 Half Marathon championships in Syracuse.

| Jennifer Rodriguez [Malavolta at the time] competing at the 2023 USATF Masters HM Championships in Syracuse NY |
More recently, she finished 4th overall at the 2024 Masters HM over a hilly Indianapolis course in 1:26:45. This year, Rodriguez won the W50 10K championship in Dedham MA in 39:27.
Like Ekemo, Guerrini is known more for shorter distances and cross country. This fall, Guerrini finished 3rd in W55 at the 5K Masters Cross Country Championships at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco with a 21:54 performance. She ran 19:41 at Carlsbad this spring and a 41:50 10K at the Dinosaur Dash 10K this November. In between Guerrini turned in a 1:08:10 age division win at the Surf City 10 Miler. That is age grade equivalent to a 1:31:09. Guerrini should be ready to run with the lead pack, at least for the first few loops. If she is in contention with one 1.64 mile loop to go, who knows?
There are lots of unknowns. Rodriguez has the best recent results. But the last time they met on the roads, admittedly seven years ago, Gacek/Shuch enjoyed the edge. That could make a difference. i will go with a likely finishing order of Rodriguez-Gacek-Ekemo but would not be amazed to see Ekimo move up if she has honed her fitness in recent months. As noted, Guerrini, out of the 55-59 division could crack the podium.

AGE DIVISION WOMEN W40 Ekemo is the sole entrant in W40. She takes the win unopposed.
W45 Sally Pena Unaffiliated, TX competes against Gacek/Schuch in this division. Her recent outings include a 2:15:34 half marathon at RnR San Antonio and a 57:13 10K in October 2024. Gacek [Schuch], picked for the overall podium, should take the division win.

W70 Mary Faria Unaffiliated, TX is the favorite. She ran a 1:46:46 at the 3M Austin Half Marathon in February 2024. Last November she ran 1:27:02 at the Run for the Water 10 Miler in Austin. In May oof this year, Faria turned in a 50:46 perform86ance at the Austin Sunshine 10K. Cynthia Lucking Atlanta TC, the 2025 W70 Masters National Grand Prix champion, typically runs shorter road races and crtoss country. She, no doubt, expected two other teammates to enter. Unfortunately for the team, only one other Atlanta runner was able to make it. So there will be no team competition for Lucking. She will get good points for the individual grand prix. Lucking is likely to finish second. Lucking won the W70 4 Mile Championship in Peoria IL this year at 37:33. She finished third at the 10 Km championships in 56:50. Helene Myers Potomac Valley TC is not fast. But she competes widely and finishes her races. She earns lots of Grand Prix points. She finished 2nd to Lucking in W70 last year and won in 2024 when Lucking was still in W65. She finished second to Lucking in Peoria, 14 minutes back in 51:57. Myers is not afraid of long races. She ran 2:10:50 at a 15K in April and clocked 3:16:35 in the half marathon at the 2025 Dayton Marathon in September. The most likely order of finish seems to be Faria-Lucking-Myers.

W75 Jeannie Rice Unaffiliated, OH is the American Record holder, in the W75 division, from the Mile, 6:44, to the Half Marathon 1:40:58 and the Marathon 3:33:27. She also holds the W75 World Record for her 3:33:27 at London in 2024. Not surprisingly she is the favorite.

Andrea McCarter Atlanta TC is looking for Individual Grand Prix points, as her team is incomplete. McCarter won the W70 2024 half marathon championship in Indianapolis last November at 2:40:215. She ran 2:59:55 at the INVESCO QQQ HM in Atlanta the following month. Rice should win, followed by McCarter in second.

M45 Although Michael Wilt Bat City TC did not get discussed in the Overall section, his results are not far off those who were discussed. He could certainly break into the top five. Wilt's best recent result is his 1:17:29 half marathon at the 3M race in Austin in February 2024. His performances since that race have been not quite as strong. In November of last year, he ran 2:45:21 at the Indy Monumental Marathon, age grade equivalent to 1:19:46 for a half marathon. In February he ran 1:19:54 at the Daisy Princess HM in Orlando and followed that in April with a 37:13 10K at the Statesman Capitol 10K. Bryan Hendricks Gulf Winds TC, FL has enjoyed some solid outings at Masters National championships over shorter distances on the track, the roads and Cross Country. Probably most relevant for this championship are two recent half marathons. Last November, Hendricks finished tenth in a stacked field with a 1:22:22 effort over a hilly half marathon course in Indianapolis. He followed that in February of this year with a 1:22:57 half marathon at the Tallahassee Marathon. Wilt's teammate, Dominic Ricci's recent performances include a 1:30:00 at the 3M Half Marathon in January 2024. This past February he clocked 1:29:49 at the Austin International Half Marathon. The puzzle is that Ricci participated in the December 2022 CIM, running 2:52:05. If he has regained that kind of fitness, it would be much more competitive for the silver medal. My best guess is that the final order is more likely to be Wilt, Hendricks and Ricci in that order.

M50 Darden, competitive for the top spot overall should take the win in M50. His teammate, Alan Black mostly runs shorter races, but he has trained up for this effort. He finished 2nd M50 at the 2025 Masters 4 Mile championships in June with a 22:57. On Thanksgiving Day this year, Black clocked 1:18:34 in the Race for Grace Half Marathon in Georgia. Peter Christopher Unaffiliated, NH, Hernan Rozemberg Unaffiliated, TX, and Jerry Snider Unaffiliated, TX should contest the bronze medal. In October of last year, Christopher ran 2:59:14 at the Baystate Marathon. This September, Christopher demonstrated that he could do better, lowering that to 2:47:19 at the Clarence Demar HM. That is age grade equivalent to a 1:20:46 half marathon. Rozemberg ran 1:21:34 at the 3M Austin HM. A few months later he ran a 1:29:44 half marathon in Eugene OR. In December 2024, Rozemberg clocked 1:25:51 at the RnR San Antonio HM. I am familiar with Snider primarily as a fast 5K runner. He finished 4th M45 over an 'Atlanta Flat' 5K course in 16:59. The next year he had 5K's ranging from 16:06 to 16:24 to 16:50. Snider enjoyed aa solid build in October and early November with regular 50+ miles per week efforts. It seems that is most likely not sufficient to leave him as competitive at the HM as he is at the 5K. Hence, I guess the more likely podium finish is Darden, Black and Christopher, in that order.

M55 Putnam and Zoldak are discussed as Overall contenders. Therefore, my view is that Putnam finishing first in this division ahead of Zoldak is more likely than a reversal of that order. Scott Siriano Shore AC, NJ the 2023 and 2024 55-59 Masters National Grand Prix champion, competes from the Mile to the Half Marathon. In 2022, Siriano finished 8th in the Masters 10 Mile championships at the Sactown 10 with a 1:03:35. Two years later, over a more challenging Crim 10 Mile course in Flint MI, he finished 5th with a 1:04:56. A 1:04 Ten Miler is roughly equivalent to a 1:25:17 half marathon. In 2023 he ran 1:26:50 on a hilly course on an unseasonably warm day in Syracuse, to finish 4th M55 at the Masters Half Marathon Championships. Christophe Cadiou Atlanta TC is his closest competition for the bronze medal. He ran 1:29:20 to capture 5th M50 at the 2024 Masters Half Marathon Championships. Cadiou finished two minutes behind Siriano at the 2024 Masters 12 Km Championships. Therefore, it seems reasonable to project Putnam-Zoldak-Siriano as the likely order of finish.
Top Podium Contenders in Alphabetical Order:
Gregory Putnam Scott Siriano Frank Zoldak
M60 Alan Evans Genesee Valley Harriers, NY appears to be the strongest contender. In 2022, he finished 7th in M55 at the Masters Half Marathon Championships in 1:22:55. The next year he ran a 2:51:28 marathon at Grandma's and ran 2:55:28 on the same course in 2025. His teammate, Mike Nier, finished at 1:26:17 to finish 3rd in M55 at the 2023 edition of the Masters HM Championships in Syracuse. It is hard to gauge his current fitness for a half marathon effort. In August of 2024, he ran 1:28:44 at the Black Diamond Express HM but followed that this August with a 1:35:38 at the same race. Lester Dragstedt Atlanta TC finished a minute and a half behind Nier at Syracuse in 2023. But Dragstedt has been consistently on, or just off the M60 podium for the last two years. He will give Nier a battle for silver. In September 2024, Dragstedt finished 3rd M60 at the 12 Km Masters Championships in 47:40, age grade equivalent to 1:26:22. Dragstedt finished 49 seconds ahead of Nier at the Masters 10 Km Championships this year. He was still a half minute faster than Nier at the 4 Mile Championships in June. If either of those run into trouble, Nier's teammate, Mike Mertens, is likely to step up. He was a couple of minutes behind Dragstedt at Syracuse in 2023, and a couple of minutes behind Nier at the 2024 Masters 12 Km Championships. It seems I should opt for Dragstedt over Nier as that has been the recent trend in shorter races. Nier is no more of a long distance specialist than Dragstedt is. That leave me with projecting a likely finishing order of Evans-Dragstedt-Nier.
Top Podium Contenders in Alphabetical Order:
Lester Dragstedt Alan Evans Mike Nier
M65 Casey Hannan Atlanta signed up to help his M60+ teammates to a good finish. Unopposed in M65, he will walk away with the national title. New to the M65 division, Hannan was a rock-solid competitor in M60, typically finishing in the top ten at national Masters championships. He ran 1:04:23 to capture 7th M60 at the 2023 10 Mile championships and finished 10th M60 in 51:05 at the 2024 Masters 12 km Championships. He had run over two minutes faster in 2023, capturing 7th in M60.
M70 Douglas Chesnut Boulder Road Runners finished 3rd M70 at last year's half marathon championships. The course was challenging; his 1:37:53 would have been under 1:37 on many courses. His record suggests he is the favorite this year. Chesnut finished 6th at the 10 Mile Championships last year. None of those who finished ahead of him at either championship are entered in this division. Scott Lucking Atlanta could challenge. He finished 3rd in M65 at the 2023 12 Km Championships in 52:34, consistent with a 1:35:24 HM. But Lucking ran a half marathon this August in Marquette MI, clocking 1:41:25. The Upper Peninsula of Michigan is known for its hefty populations of mosquitos, black flies, etc. I wonder if Lucking has any such stories to tell. Another intriguing entry is Bruce Kirschner Boulder Road Runners. Kirshner took some time away and is just getting back into national competition. In March 2024, Kirschner ran 1:38:55 at the NYC half marathon. But he then ran into some minor health concerns that limited his performance. Later that spring he ran 1:48:53 in the Colorado HM at altitude. He followed that with a 1:52:7 effort at the Duke City HM, in Albuquerque, also at altitude. I understand that he made progress with those health concerns. Is his current fitness closer to 1:40 or 1:50; we will find out tomorrow. If any of those falter, Eugene Myers, who is coming back from a health issue, could step up. He ran 1:45:26 to finish 6th M70 at last year's Masters Championships and turned in a 1:22:15 at the National Capitol ten miler in Washington D.C. this November. The most likely order of finish seems to be Chesnut-Lucking- Kirschner.

M75 Doug Bell, Don Morrison and Jerry Learned are all very solid competitors at the national level. But Bell and Morrison are the 'new kids on the block' in M75. Morrison came in 52 seconds ahead of Learned at the 5 km Championships this October in Atlanta. At the 2024 half marathon Masters championships in Indianapolis last October, Morrison, then in M70, ran 14 minutes faster than Learned. Bell did not run in those championships. Bell ran much faster than Learned at the Masters 10 Mile championships in 2023. Although, to be fair, that was when Learned was not at his best. But this past June, Bell, on an off day, still outpaced Learned at the 4 Mile Championships by a half minute. Bell finished two minutes ahead of Learned at the Masters 10 Km championships. On the other hand, Learned just beat Bell over 8 Km at the Cross Country championships in Portland OR. It could be that Learned is in better condition right now or it could be that he negotiates a muddy course better than Bell does. At the 10 Mile Championships in Flint MI inn 2024, Bell came in a couple of minutes ahead of Morrison. With such mixed information, the crystal ball is a bit murky. One thing is for sure; it will be a heck of a race! My best guess is an order of Morrison-Bell-Learned but I would not be amazed by any other permutation.

AGE GRADING MEN Darden, Putnam and Zoldak appear to be the three strongest contending for the age grading medals. If Evans has a good day, he could muscle his way onto the podium.
WOMEN Rice, from W75, rarely grades below 90%, especially at races in her wheelhouse, like the HM. She is a strong favorite to take the age grading crown. Rodriguez, out of W50, is likely next, with Gacek, out of W45, next in line after her.
TEAMS Note: Team declarations are not final until the end of Packet Pickup and are not posted publicly except possibly on site.
WOMEN There do not appear to be any complete three-athlete teams on the Wome3n's aside.
MEN M40+ Bat City is a lock for this. They either take it unopposed or take it ahead of a composite team made up of runners from higher age divisions. M50+ If Atlanta keeps its logical M50+ team together [Black, Cadiou, Darden, Hawkins and Strickland] together they should take M50+. M60+ GVH looks solid for the 60+ crown. M70+ Boulder should take this one un8less the Club decides that points in M50_ have priority. In that case the three M70+ runners could drop down and run with Zoldak in M50+. They would likely finish second to Atlanta in M50+ instead of winning M70+.
That is it for the preview. Best of luck to the runners tomorrow!
