Records. The Mile event has only been approved for Masters Records for a couple of years. It is still not approved for Open records. That means things are still a bit unsettled. Rather than simply go forward from that point it was decided to honor the achievements of runners starting with the USATF Masters 1 Mile Championships in 2013 [Pittsburgh's Liberty Mile]. The Road Racing Technical Council ruled that the courses need to be remeasured and recertified for records to be validated. As a result there are records listed as pending from that time that are faster than the current listed ratified records.
Ratified records, as of August 22, 2019 included:
M40 John Gardiner 4:31
M45 Kevin Castille 4:24
M50 Todd Straka 4:48
M55 Nat Larson 4:49
M60 Thomas Dever 5:19
M65 Tom Bernhard 5:18
M70 Gary Patton and Harold Nolan 6:07
M75 Doug Goodhue 6:17
M80 Jim Askew 7:44
W40 Renee Tolan 5:24
W45 Sonja Friend-Uhl 5:07
W50 Marisa Sutera Strange 5:27
W55 Doreen McCoubrie 5:33
W60 Mary Richards 6:35
W65 Sabra Harvey 6:06
W70 Jeannie Rice 6:37
W75 Ellen Nitz 9:46
W80 Tami Graf 11:29
The following performances in 2018 bettered the listed ratified record at that time and, presumably, should have been ratified, but apparently were not: M60 Roger Sayre 5:14 M70 Lloyd Hansen 6:02
The following performances from the 2013 USATF Masters 1 Mile Championships in Pittsburgh are awaiting recertification of the race course:
W40 Magdalena Lewy-Boulet 4:50
W50 Doreen McCoubrie 5:18
W60 Kathryn Martin 5:44
M40 Nicholas Berra 4:28
M50 Alan Wells 4:40
M70 Doug Goodhue 5:43
M85 Louis Lodovico 10:11.
My usual practice for other distances is to report any times [on a record-eligible course that is usatf-certified in an event that is usatf-sanctioned] which better the current ratified record at the time of the performance as a record-breaking performance. Even if there is a pending record that is better; pending records are not always ratifiable. In what follows, I refer to any performance this year that bettered a ratified record in the first listing above as a record-breaking performance.
[I am reporting net times, not gun times; net times are used for Masters American Recrd purposes.]
Twelve records were toppled in this year's 1 Mile Championship--6 Women’s and 6 Men’s American Records were set! Jeannie Rice, who holds records from the 1 Mile to the Marathon, broke her own American Record by 12 seconds as she paced out a 6:25.

Sonja Friend-Uhl did the same in 5:06, breaking her own 45-49 record by a single second!

In a mad dash to the finish line, Jan Frisby beat the current 75-79 record holder, Doug Goodhue, by a second and a half, and took his existing record by one second in 6:16.

[This is under review; I have learned that there was a discrepancy between the mat time recorded at the finish line and the time recorded on the finish line camera. By rule, the slowest of the two times is the official time.]
Fiona Bayly took down Marisa Sutera Strange’s 50-54 record by 4 seconds in 5:23

and Bob Giambalvo’s 6:00 took 7 seconds off the 70-74 record. It was a tremendous evening of racing!
The next post will recap the Overall, Age-Grading, Age Division, and Team competitions in Flint.
